"The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”                                                                                                                                                    —Thomas Edison

Whole Food Vitamins vs Synthetic

Anyone who has studied biochemistry learns that vitamins do not exist as single components that act on their own.  Vitamins are made up of several different components –  enzymes, co-enzymes, and co-factors– that must work together to produce their intended biologic effects.

Vitamins that are found naturally in whole foods come with all of their necessary components. Here are some facts that you won’t find advertised on the label of synthetic vitamins:

Whole Food Supplements vs Synthetic Vitamins

Many people come into our office taking a whole array of “stuff.” They sometimes don’t even really know why they are taking it. Maybe their friend is taking it, or another family member, or they read about it in a current magazine. However they heard about it, their hope is to find a vitamin that makes them feel better, increase energy, improve memory, gain vitality, lose weight, prevent disease…and the list goes on. They may have noticed a difference initially in their symptoms, but it is likely their symptoms will reappear and typically with new symptoms to follow shortly (this will be discussed later). Before you purchase your next bottle of vitamins, you must understand the truth about vitamins.

What is the truth about vitamins?

It is safe to say that most of us are currently taking or have taken supplements to complement our diets to ensure we are getting all the proper nutrients our bodies need to build, repair, and regenerate.  And with all the vitamin companies in the industry, it is essential you have the proper understanding of the types of vitamins being produced.  There are supplements that your body recognizes as a nutrient and function as it was designed to do, and there are vitamins that are chemically created to replicate an isolated nutrient, which are missing key activators to function properly.

What exactly is the difference?

In short, it’s the difference between something that is living and something that is dead. That’s a big difference. Let’s explore further what this actually means.

Synthetic Vitamins also known as isolates, are missing all their naturally occurring essential synergistic co-factors and transporters to function as a natural vitamin.  A synthetic vitamin has been isolated out of its original nutrient structure.  To keep it simple, these types of vitamins are not complete Whole Food Nutritionand do not function in the body as a natural vitamin complex.  It can stimulate a cell’s metabolism, but it cannot upgrade or replace the cell’s components with superior, better quality elements. For this reason, the body responds to an isolated vitamin in the same way it responds to a toxin.

Whole Food Supplements provide nutrients as they are found in nature—in a whole food state where they have natural potency and efficacy.  A fully functioning vitamin consists of enzymes, coenzymes, trace minerals, and antioxidants in a protein matrix, it is an extremely complex organic compound that is essential for maintenance of life and health.  Whole food nutrients remain intact and are not split from their natural synergists allowing them to function in the cell, allowing for regeneration, repair, and rebuilding.

Why are synthetic vitamins harmful? Not only are synthetic vitamins an incomplete vitamin complex, and do not function in the body the same as a whole vitamin complex, they typically are in large doses and act as a toxin over time.  Synthetic “vitamins” are not health producing. They actually cause what is known as a rebound effect. They go into the body and act like a vacuum because they don’t have everything they need to perform their function. For example, if you take vitamin C in the form of “ascorbic acid”, you are getting only one component of the vitamin C complex.  In order for ascorbic acid to try and function in the body, it requires the other components of the vitamin C complex to truly function properly.  The only way to get all the components of vitamin C is to steal from your organs and tissues to make the incomplete nutrient function properly. When you keep putting synthetic nutrients into your body, eventually you deplete it of necessary minerals, enzymes and co-factors and you feel worse than when you started on the vitamins!

If the potency is higher than anything you would find in nature (example 1000% Daily Recommended Allowance of Vitamin C per serving), the product contains synthetically produced ingredients, no matter what the producer of that product might claim.

Whole food supplements are different. They are actually food processed in a way that it is alive and full of useful nutrients.  They do not have much for quantity in them, but they do have the most important part…THE FUNCTION! They build the body up instead of vacuuming it or depleting it. People on whole food vitamins just get healthier without a rebound effect!

Where can I get whole food supplements?  This office provides our patients with whole food supplements by Standard Process®.  Standard Process has been distributing their supplements since 1929 and is sold only through healthcare professionals.  They grow many of their crops on their own organic farmland and harvest and manufacture their own products.  These whole food supplements contain millions if not billions of molecules that go a long way to improve our health. This is by far better than some multi-vitamin that has 40 man made chemicals in it!
